Demonstrate, when interpreting oral and written texts, knowledge of Mandarin language concepts including vocabulary, sentence structure and linguistic conventions.

Indicators for this outcome
(a) Apply prior knowledge to read new Standard Chinese words using hanyu pinyin.

Comprehend common sight words including:

  • Standard Chinese characters with multiple pronunciations and meanings (e.g., 多duō音yīn多duō义yì字zì: 的 – 我wǒ的de,目mù的dì;发 - 头tóu发fà,出chū发fā); and,
  • Standard Chinese characters with multiple meanings (e.g., 心xīn, 把bǎ).
(c) Relate different sight words in varying contexts.
(d) Discuss the use of Standard Chinese characters that look alike but have different meanings (e.g., 错cuò 别bié 字zì).

Analyze the effect of linguistic conventions on communication, including:

  • reflexive pronouns (e.g., “自z ì 己j ǐ”);
  • conjunctions in sentences (e.g., “又yòu … 又yòu…”, “要yào是shi … 就jiù…”, “不bú是shi … 就jiù是shi …”, “不bú但dàn …而ér且qiě…”, “虽suī然rán … 但dàn是shì/也y ě…”, “假jiǎ如r ú … 就jiù…”, “一y ì边biān …一y ì边biān …”);
  • passive voice in a sentence (e.g., “被bèi”, “让ràng”, “给gěi”, “叫jiào”);
  • percentage and fractional expressions in Standard Chinese (e.g., “百bǎi分fēn之zhī”(percentage), “三sān分fēn之zhī二è r” (2⁄3)). (Note the difference between how the percentage and fractions are read in Standard Chinese compared to English.); and,
  • adjectives to describe intensity (e.g., “太tài…+adjective+ …了l e”).
