ELA10.11
Apply comprehension and metacognitive strategies that deepen understanding and analysis when reading, listening and viewing.
Indicators for this outcome
| (a) | Apply global, problem-solving and support strategies to monitor learning and deepen comprehension when reading, listening and viewing (see Appendix B and Appendix C). |
| (b) | Make and refine predictions before and during reading, listening, or viewing by drawing on titles, genre features, prior knowledge and contextual clues. |
| (c) | Establish a specific purpose before reading, listening, and viewing (e.g., understanding argument, identifying genre features, evaluating author's stance) and adjust strategies (e.g., shifting from skimming to close reading when a key argument or tone shift appears) as new information is encountered. |
| (d) | Identify when understanding breaks down and use strategies (e.g., re-reading, summarizing, slowing down pace, asking questions for clarification) to improve comprehension. |
| (e) | Apply morphology strategies by analyzing word parts (i.e., roots, prefixes, suffixes) to decode unfamiliar vocabulary and enhance comprehension. |
| (f) | Engage with texts multiple times for distinct purposes (e.g., first encounter for basic comprehension, second for analyzing structure or language features, third for interpreting author’s/creator’s craft, tone or deeper meanings). |
| (g) | Explain how recognizing genre-specific craft techniques during reading, listening or viewing (e.g., narrative suspense, persuasive appeals, poetic repetition) enhances comprehension, supports interpretation and deepens awareness of purpose and audience impact. |
| (h) | Use support strategies during and after reading, listening or viewing (e.g., annotating texts, posing questions, taking structured notes, using graphic organizers) to map key ideas and analyze texts. |
| (i) | Visualize complex descriptions or abstract ideas that enhance understanding of challenging sections. |
| (j) | Reflect on the effectiveness of personal comprehension strategies post-task by identifying what worked, what was challenging and setting specific future goals. |
